All you need to know about learning to drive
Provisional Driving Licence
1. First off you need to be 17 (or if you are disabled
and in receipt of mobility allowance, 16)
2. Before you can have driving lessons you'll need
your provisional licence. Click
here to apply online at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency
(DVLA) website or go to your post office and fill in form D1.
3. It will cost you £45 for your licence and
you'll need a photo and one of the following ID:
- full valid current passport
- UK birth/adoption certificate
- certificate of registry of birth (provided your name is present on
the certificate)
- identity card issued by a member state of the European Community/European
Economic Area (EC/EEC)
- travel documents issued by the Home Office
- UK certificate of naturalisation

Driving Lessons - your driving instructor
1. Make sure your instructor is an Approved
Driving Instructor (ADI) and registered with the Driving Standards
Agency (DSA)
2. Make sure your ADI tells you about:-
- all aspects of driving
- what books to read
- when to take your test
- how to practice
Driving Test
Your driving test will be divided in to two parts:-
1. A computerised Theory Test of
mainly multiple choice questions and a video-based Hazard Perception
Test.
2. A Practical Test of your driving.
You must pass both parts before you can apply for
a full driving licence.
